2^nd Chapter Vān chiRappu (வான் சிறப்பு)
வான் – மழை; Rain
சிறப்பு - தலைமை; superiority

After LORD the poet has given importance to RAIN.

நிழலின் அருமை வெயிலில் தெரியும்; The meaning of this saying is that the greatness of the shade will be felt only after we have experienced the scorching heat of the sun. One thing here is to be noted that we praise something when we had experienced the absence of it.  The worth of something is not felt when it is received in a matter of routine and it is taken for granted.  So may be Thrivalluvar might have experienced draught in sometime of his life time. It is just my assumption.

Andal in Thiruppavai had requested for the rain as below:
Theengindri naadellam thingal mummari peidhu).
“A country should neither have drought nor should it have rain that would wash everything away. It should rain in the optimum quantity for the people to enjoy its benefits. The rain should pour thrice in a month.”

குறள் 11	வான்நின்று உலகம் வழங்கி வருதலால் தான்அமிழ்தம் என்றுணரற் பாற்று.

Meaning by words	வான் - மழை; Rain நின்று –  எப்பொழுதும்;  பருவம் தவறாது பெய்ய; Always உலகம்  - பூமி; the earth வழங்கி வருதலால் தான்; (சீவராசிகள்) வாழ்ந்து வருவதால் தான்; sustains the living beings அமிழ்தம் - அமிர்தம்; Ambrosia என்றுணரற் பாற்று – என்று எண்ணத்தக்தாகும்; can be regarded
Meaning in Tamil	மழை பருவம் தவறாது பெய்ய சீவராசிகள் வாழ்ந்து வருவதால் தான் அம்மழை அமிர்தம் என்று எண்ணத்தக்தாகும்
Meaning in English	It is the unfailing fall of rain that sustains the word. Therefore, look upon rain as the nectar of life
Explanation	Rain is held as nectar of heaven because it sustains and rejuvenates life on earth. Because elixir like quality exists in rain the poet calls is as nectar

குறள் 12	துப்பார்க்குத் துப்பாய துப்பாக்கித் துப்பார்க்குத் துப்பாய தூஉம் மழை.

Meaning by words	துப்பார்க்கு -  உண்பார்களுக்கு; for the food eaters   துப்பாய -  நல்ல; good துப்பாக்கித் –உணவுகளை உண்டாக்கி; produces food துப்பாய தூஉம் – தான் ஓர் உணவாக இருப்பதும்; it itself forms a food as drinking water மழை - மேகத்தினின்று பொழியும் நீர்; Rain
Meaning in Tamil	உண்பவர்க்குத் தக்க உணவுப் பொருள்களை விளைவித்துத் தருவதோடு, பருகுவோர்க்குத் தானும் ஓர் உணவாக இருப்பது மழையாகும்.
Meaning in English	Rain produces the food we eat; it also forms a food as drinking water.
Explanation	Here he shows the essentiality of rain.  Rain helps to build every food while it is a food in the form of drinking water.

குறள் 13	விண்இன்று பொய்ப்பின் விரிநீர் வியனுலகத்து உள்நின்று உடற்றும் பசி.
Trans- literation	viN indru poippin virinīr Viyanulakaththu uLnin Ru udatrum pasi
Meaning by words	விண்இன்று -  மேகத்தின்று;  From the Clouds பொய்ப்பின் - வேண்டிய காலத்துமழை பெய்யாது நின்று விடுமாயின்; if rain does not fall at proper time and stops விரிநீர்  வியனுலகத்து உள் - பரந்த கடலால் சூழப்பட்ட உலகத்துள்; earth surrounded by the vast ocean நின்று உடற்றும் பசி – பசி நிலைத்து நின்று ௨யிர்களை வருத்தும்; hunger will trouble all the living beings.
Meaning in Tamil	மழை பெய்யாமல் போய்விடுமானால், கடல் சூழ்ந்த அகன்ற உலகமாக இருந்தும் பசி உள்ளே நிலைத்து நின்று உயிர்களை வருத்தும்.
Meaning in English	If clouds fail to rain, hunger will strangle al the living beings on the earth though it is surrounded by the vast oceans
Explanation	Even though earth is covered by 3/4th of water if the clouds deceive or does not release water as rain the entire living beings will suffer.

குறள் 14	ஏரின் உழாஅர் உழவர் புயல்என்னும் வாரி வளங்குன்றிக் கால்.
Trans- literation	Erin uzhāar uzhavar puyalennum Vāri VaLangundrik Kāl
Meaning by words	ஏர் - -கலப்பை; plow உழாஅர்  -  உழ மாட்டார்; will not plough உழவர்  -  வேளாண்மை செய்பவர்; farmer புயல்என்னும் – மழை; rain வாரி  -  வருவாய்; income வளம் செழுமை; prosperity குன்றிக் கால். குறைந்து விட்டால்; got reduced
Meaning in Tamil	மழை என்னும் வருவாய் தன் வளத்தில் குறைந்தால், உழவர் ஏரால் உழவு செய்யமாட்டார்
Meaning in English	If the rainfall is inadequate the farmers will not use the plow.
Explanation	Here rain is input and agricultural produce is output. If there is not sufficient rain ploughing the fields will not give any results so the farmer will not use the plow to plough the fields.

குறள் 15	கெடுப்பதூஉம் கெட்டார்க்குச் சார்வாய்மற் றாங்கே எடுப்பதூஉம் எல்லாம் மழை.
Trans- literation	Keduppadhōum Kettārkkuch chārvāimatRānge eduppadhōum ellaam Mazhai
Meaning by words	கெடுப்பதூஉம்  - பெய்யாமல் வாழ்வைக் கெடுக்க வல்லதும்; failed rain can harm கெட்டார்க்குச்  - மழையில்லாமல் வளம் கெட்டு நொந்தவர்க்கும்; those who suffered by absence of rain சார்வாய்மற்றாங்கே - துணையாய் அவ்வாறே; rain also supports எடுப்பதூஉம் - பின்பு அவரைத் தூக்கி விடுவதும்; llater it rejuvenates them எல்லாம் மழை. – ஆகிய எல்லாம் செய்வது மழையே; rain does everything
Meaning in Tamil	பெய்யாமல் வாழ்வைக் கெடுக்க வல்லதும் மழை; மழையில்லாமல் வளம் கெட்டு நொந்தவர்க்கும் துணையாய் அவ்வாறே காக்க வல்லதும் மழையாகும்.
Meaning in English	Rain by its absence ruins men; and by its existence restores them to fortune
Explanation	Rain can do everything.  Both scanty and too much rainfall can create havoc.  It alone can bail out from the miseries it has caused.

குறள் 16	விசும்பின் துளிவீழின் அல்லால்மற் றாங்கே பசும்புல் தலைகாண்பு அரிது.
Trans- literation	visumpin thuLivīzhin allālmaR Rānge pasumpul thalaikāN paridhu
Meaning by words	விசும்பின் துளிவீழின் அல்லால் - மேகத்திலிருந்து மழை துளிவிழாமல் போனால் If rain does not  fall from the clouds மற் றாங்கே அப்பொழுதே ; that moment பசும்புல் தலை - ஓரறிவுயிராகிய பசும்புல்லின் தலையையும்;heads of lowest grass which has one sense காண்பு அரிது. - காண முடியாது; can’t be seen
Meaning in Tamil	மேகத்திலிருந்து மழைத்துளி விழாது போனால், பசும்புல்லின் நுனியைக்கூட இங்கே காண்பது அரிதாகிவிடும்.
Meaning in English	If no drop falls from the clouds, not even the green blade of grass will be seen
Explanation	If rains does not fall not even the grass can grow.  The existence of other lives is out of question

குறள் 17	நெடுங்கடலும் தன்நீர்மை குன்றும் தடிந்தெழிலி தான்நல்கா தாகி விடின்.

Meaning by words	நெடுங்கடலும்  - பெரிய கடலும்; vast expanse of sea தன்நீர்மை குன்றும் - அதனுடைய தண்ணீர் குறையும்; the sea will lose its depthj எழிலி தான் தடிந்து நல்கா தாகி விடின். – மேகம் தன்னை குறைத்து கடல்மீது பெய்யாது விடுமானால்; if cloud does not give rain to the sea
Meaning in Tamil	மேகம் கடலிலிருந்து நீரைக் கொண்டு அதனிடத்திலேயே பெய்யாமல் விடுமானால், பெரிய கடலும் தன் வளம் குன்றிப் போகும்.
Meaning in English	Even the wealth of the wide sea will be diminished, if the cloud that has drawn (its waters) up gives them not back again (in rain)
Explanation	The main source of water vapour for the formation of water bearing cloud is the sea-water.  It the rain does not fall the sea will also lose its depth and richness.  Those who have wealth if they are not useful to the society then they will also lose their wealth.

குறள் 18	சிறப்பொடு பூசனை செல்லாது வானம் வறக்குமேல் வானோர்க்கும் ஈண்டு.

Meaning by words	சிறப்பொடு  - நன்கு மதிக்கப்ப்டும் படியாக; in better ways பூசனை - வழிபாடு; worship செல்லாது -  நடக்காது; will not happen வானம் -  மழை; Rain வறக்குமேல் – பெய்யாவிட்டால்; if does not fall வானோர்க்கும்  - தேவர்க்கும்; celestial ones ஈண்டு. – இவ்வுலகில்; in this world
Meaning in Tamil	மழை பெய்யாமல் போகுமானால் இவ்வுலகத்தில் தேவர்க்கும் நன்கு மதிக்கப்ப்டும் படியாக  வழிபாடு நடக்காது. வழிபாடு என்பது தினமும் செய்யும் பூசை, ஆண்டு தோறு நடக்கும் திருவிழாக்கள், கதை நிகழ்ச்சி, ஊர்வலம் எனாறவற்றை குறிக்கும்
Meaning in English	Should the rails fail the worship of heavenly ones in festivals and daily rites will not take place in this world.
Explanation	If there is no rain famine would rage, farmers won’t plough, there will be no vegetation and not even grasses will grow. Now in this situation people will pray but will not be in a position to offer proper worship. So for proper worship also rain is required.

குறள் 19	தானம் தவம்இரண்டும் தங்கா வியன்உலகம் வானம் வழங்கா தெனின்.
Trans- literation	thānam thavam iraNdum thangaa viyan ulagam vānam vazhangaa thenin
Meaning by words	தானம் - கொடை தவம் – நோம்பு, வேள்வி ; penance, ritual sacrifice இரண்டும் – இரண்டும் - both தங்கா - உளவாகமாட்டா வியன்உலகம் - அகன்ற நிலஉலகம்; Expansive world வானம் – முகில்; clouds வழங்காது – செய்யாது; will not perform (here will not rain) எனின் – என்றால்; then
Meaning in Tamil	பிறர் பொருட்டு செய்யும் கொடையும்,  தம் பொருட்டு செய்யும் நோம்பும், வேள்வியும் இந்த பெரிய உலகத்தில் நடைபெறாது முகில்கள் மழை பெய்ய செய்யாமல் போனால்.
Explanation in Tamil	மழை பெய்யாமல் போனால் குடிக்க நீரும் உண்ண உணவும் இருக்காது. அப்படிப்பட்ட இக்கட்டான நிலையில் பிறர்க்கா செய்யும் கொடையும் தனக்காக செய்யும் நோம்பும், வேள்வியும் நடைபெறாது.
Meaning in English	If rain fails donation of alms to others and ritual sacrifice and penance one for themselves will not take place in this expansive world,
Explanation	If rain does not happen survival in this expansive world is impossible due to want of food and water.  When one’s life is at stake how can donation or ritual sacrifice can take place. They will not happen

குறள் 20	நீரின் றமையா துலகெனின் யார்யார்க்கும் வானின் றமையா தொழுக்கு

Meaning by words	நீரின்று – நீர் இல்லாமல்; without water அமையாது – முடியாது; impossible உலகு – உலகம்; world ௭னின் – என்றால்’ then யார்யார்க்கும் – எவ்வகை மேம்பட்டவர்க்கும்; whomsoever வானின்று – மழை இல்லாமல்; without rain அமையாது – முடியாது; impossible ஒழுக்கு – நீர் ஓடுதல்; running water
Meaning in Tamil	எவ்வகை மேம்பட்டவர்க்கும் நீர் இல்லாமல் உலகத்தில் வாழ முடியாது. மழை இல்லாமல் அந்த ஓடும் நீரும் கிடைக்காது

Meaning in English	Whoever it may be nobody can live in this world without water and this water cannot be possible without rain.
Explanation	Irrespective of any distinction for everybody water is required to live and this water comes from rain and there is no other source.
