3rd Chapter Neethar Perumai

After praise of God and rain, Thiruvalluvar, in the third chapter explains the praise for the Sanyasi (நீத்தார் பெருமை).  The real sanyasi is

• The one who renounces this world
• The one who has total control over his indriyas.
• The one who has no attachment with the worldly affairs and is beyond joy or sorrow
• The one who works relentlessly for the betterment of this world, helping out each and everyone who comes in his/ her contact with love and care.
• The one who cultivates the virtues of truth, compassion and service among his/her companions.

குறள் 21 ஒழுக்கத்து நீத்தார் பெருமை விழுப்பத்து வேண்டும் பனுவல் துணிவு

Transliteration	oḻukkaththu nīththār perumai viḻuppaththu vēndum panuval thuṅivu
Meaning by words	ஒழுக்கத்து  - ஒழுக்கத்தின் கண்ணே; Discipline நீத்தார் – துறந்தாரது; renounced பெருமை – உயர்வு; glory விழுப்பத்து – சிறந்த பொருகள் பலவற்றுள்ளும்; best among many வேண்டும் – விரும்பும்; liked பனுவல் – நூல்கள்; books துணிவு – முடிவு; will decide

Meaning in English	The scriptures praise wilfully the ascetics who have detached and lived in disciplined manner as the greatest among the great things
Explanation	Scriptures wilfully praises the greatness of the ascetics who follows a disciplined life. The noble persons motivate others to lead a disciplined life.

Meaning in Tamil	பற்றினை விட்டவரின் உயர்வுகளின் அளவை சொன்னால் உலகத்தில் செத்தவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கையிட்டு கொண்டால்போல்ஆகும்.
Meaning in English	Trying to quantify the greatness of those who have overcome desire is like counting those who have died till now.
Explanation	In the first kural the poet says scriptures wilfully praises the greatness of the ascetics who follows a disciplined life. In the second says it is immeasurable. If one wants to enumerate all of them it will be like trying to find out the exact number of people who have died since beginning of human life.

குறள் 23 இருமை வகைதெரிந்து ஈண்டுஅறம் பூண்டார் பெருமை பிறங்கிற்று உலகு.

Meaning by words	இருமை வகை  - பிறப்பும் இறப்பும் என்ற இரண்டின் தத்துவங்களை; doctrine of birth and death தெரிந்து – ஆராய்ந்தறிந்து; understand ஈண்டுஅறம் பூண்டார் – அறவாழ்க்கையை மேற்கொண்டவரின்; practiced the just life பெருமை பிறங்கிற்று உலகு – பெருமையே உலகத்தில் உயர்ந்தது; glory is greatest in this world.

குறள் 24 உரனென்னும் தோட்டியான் ஓரைந்தும் காப்பான் வரனென்னும் வைப்பிற்கோர் வித்து.

Meaning by words	உரனென்னும் தோட்டியான்  - மனோ திட்டம் என்னும் கருவியால்; Fortitude as instrument ஓரைந்தும் காப்பான் – ஐந்து இந்திரியங்களை அடக்கி ஆளக் கூடியவன்; who can control the five senses வரனென்னும் வைப்பிற்கு – வரங்களைத் தரும் சிறந்த இடத்திற்கு; heaen வித்து – விதை போலாவான்; will be like a seed

Meaning in English	The one who controls the five senses with the help of the instrument of fortitude is seen as the seed of heaven.
Explanation	As you sow, so shall you reap. The renounced who control the five senses and lead a good life becomes a good seed and pave a way to heaven.

Meaning by words	ஐந்தவித்தான்  - ஐந்து இந்திரியங்களை அடக்கி வாழ்பவனுடைய; The one who controls the five senses ஆற்றல் – பெருமை ; glory அகல்விசும்பு – விரிவான மேலுலகத்தில்; in spacious heaven உளார் கோமான் – இருக்கும் மன்னனான; king who lives இந்திரனே சாலும் – இந்திரனே அமையும்; Indiran becomes கரி – சான்று; proof

Meaning in English	Indra in the spacious abode of heaven is the proof of the greatness of the one who controls the five senses.
Explanation	The Lord Indra has been punished for his weaknes to control the senses. The renounced are greater than Indra as they control their senses and devoid of any attachment.

குறள் 26 செயற்கரிய செய்வார் பெரியர் சிறியர் செயற்கரிய செய்கலா தார்.

Transliteration	Seyaṛkariya seivār periyar siṛiyar seyaṛkariya seykalā thār
Meaning by words	செயற்கரிய  - செய்வதற்கு அரிதான உயர்ந்த காரியங்களை; great work செய்வார் – செய்பவர்கள் ; the one who does பெரியர் – பெரியவர்கள் ; great சிறியர் – சிறியவர்கள்; low people செயற்கரிய செய்கலா தார் – (அப்படி) அரிய காரியங்களை செய்யாதவர்கள் ; the one who cannot do

Meaning in English	The ones who do noble and difficult work are the great people and those who cannot do such work are low people.
Explanation	Great people work for the welfare of the society at large without self-interest and without any attachment. The low people are controlled by their senses and cannot do those.

குறள் 27 சுவைஒளி ஊறுஓசை நாற்றமென ஐந்தின் வகைதெரிவான் கட்டே உலகு.

Transliteration	suvaioḻ ūṛu ōsai nātramena aindhin vagaidherivān katte ulagu.
Meaning by words	சுவை  - நாக்கின் ருசி; taste ஒளி – கண்ணின் பார்வை; eye sight ஊறு – தொடுதல் உணர்ச்சி; touch ஓசை – காதில் கேட்கும் ஒலி; sound நாற்றம் – மூக்கில் முகரும் மணம்; smell என ஐந்தின் – என்ற ஐந்து இந்திரிய இயல்புகளை ; five senses வகைதெரிவான் – அறிந்து அவற்றை வசப்படுத்துகிறவனை தான் ; the one who controls கட்டே உலகு – உலகம் பாராட்டும்; world will praise

குறள் 28 நிறைமொழி மாந்தர் பெருமை நிலத்து மறைமொழி காட்டி விடும்.

Transliteration	niṛaimoḻi māndhar perumai nilaththu maṛaimoḻi katti vidum
Meaning by words	நிறைமொழி மாந்தர்  - நிரம்பிய கல்வி அறிவுடைய மாந்தர்களின்; knowledgeable person பெருமை – greatness; renounced நிலத்து – இந்த பூமியில் நிலைத்து நினறு ; will stay in this world மறைமொழி – (அவர்களுடைய) உபதேசம்; their preachings காட்டி விடும் &ndash ; தெளிவாக காற்றி விடுகின்றன; show

Meaning in English	Learned persons teachings shows their greatness and their words are to stay in this world to enlighten others.
Explanation	The teachings of the learned and those who live as they preach shows their greatness and will stay in this world to enlighten the present and future generations.

Meaning in English	Those who have reached the peak of goodness cannot withhold anger.
Explanation	Those who have reached the peak of goodness cannot get angry because they don't differentiate between like and dislike.

குறள் 30 அந்தணர் என்போர் அறவோர்மற் றெவ்வுயிர்க்கும் செந்தண்மை பூண்டொழுக லான்.

Transliteration	Andhaṇar enbōr a ṛavormaṛt ṛevvuyirkkum sendhaṇmai pūṇdoḻuga lān.
Meaning by words	அந்தணர்  - துறவிகள் ; Monks என்போர் – என்பவர்கள் ; are the people who ar considered as அறவோர் – தர்மங்களுக்கு இருப்பிடமானவர்கள் (ஏனென்றால் அவர்கள்); abode of good noble qualities because மற் றெவ்வுயிர்க்கும் – மற்ற எல்லா உயிர்களுக்கும்; to all the living beings செந்தண்மை – மகிழ்ச்சி தருகிற மேன்மையான செயல்களை ; they do pleasure giving noble deeds பூண்டு ஒழுகலான் – விரதமாகக் கொண்டு நடந்து கொள்வதால்; as a religious observance.

Meaning in English	The Monks are the people who are considered as abode of good noble qualities because to all the living beings they do pleasure giving noble deeds as a religious observance.
Explanation	Monks are considered abode of good qualities as they wilfully do good to all living be They show kindness to all the living ings without partiality. Since they are beyond attachment and do not have likes and dislikes. They do social service without any expectation.

Before going to the next chapter 'Importance of morality' the poet praises the greatness of the ascetics to motivate others to lead a disciplined life. Their greatness cannot be measured. They are devoid of any attachments. They control the five senses. Even Lord Indra cannot match with the ascetics in goodness. They do great work which normal people cannot do. They gain spiritual strength by controlling the senses and the world is proud of them. Their preaching lives long in this world to enlighten the present and future generations. They don't get angry because they don't differentiate between the like and dislike and how can they get angry when they are full of compassion to all the living beings.
