அறன் வலியுறுத்தல் - Assertion of the Strength of Virtue

In the earlier chapter, the poet explains the greatness of the ascetics and in this chapter, he stresses the importance of the performance of good works like justice, hospitality liberality, and also what has been prescribed by the renounced persons. By praising the ascetics he motivates the people to follow the good virtues. Everybody cannot be ascetics and should not be also. But following the advice of them is a must.

மனிதன் தன் வாழ்க்கையில் நல்ல செயல்களை செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று கட்டாயப்படுத்துகிறார்

குறள் 31 சிறப்புஈனும் செல்வமும் ஈனும் அறத்தினூஉங்கு ஆக்கம் எவனோ உயிர்க்கு.

Transliteration	sirappuīnum selvamum īnum aṛaththinūngu ākkam evanō uyirkku
Meaning by words	சிறப்புஈனும் ‐ புகழ் தரும்; gives popularity செல்வமும் ஈனும்   ‐  மிகுதியான பொருளும் தரும்; gives even prosperity; அறத்தினூஉங்கு(ஆகையால் அப்படிப்பட்ட) நல்வினையை காட்டிலும்;(hence) more than good deeds; –  ஆக்கம் – உயர்ந்தது; better எவனோ உயிர்க்கு ‐ யாது மனிதர்க்கு; what for people
Meaning in Tamil	அறத்தை விட உயர்ந்தது எதுவுமில்லை. புகழ் தரும் மிகுதியான பொருளும் தரும் (ஆகையால் அப்படிப்பட்ட) நல்வினையை காட்டிலும் உயர்ந்தது யாது மனிதர்க்கு
Meaning in English	Good deeds give popularity and even prosperity; hence what is better for humans more than good deeds.
Explanation	By following good virtues one gains popularity for sure. At first, they are praised for their good work and are popular. They even amass prosperity also. So nothing is more rewarding than good virtues.

குறள் 32 அறத்தினூஉங்கு ஆக்கமும் இல்லை அதனை மறத்தலின் ஊங்கில்லை கேடு

Transliteration	aṛaththinūngu ākḳamum illai adhanai maṛaththalin ūngillai kēdu
Meaning by words	அறத்தினூஉங்கு  – தர்மமான நல்ல காரியங்களை செய்வதை காட்டிலும்; Rather than doing good deeds ஆக்கமும் இல்லை  – நன்மை தரக்கூடியது வேறு இல்லை; nothing else is beneficial அதனை மறத்தலின்  – அதனை மறந்துவிட்டோம் ஆயின்; By not doing good works ஊங்கில்லை கேடு  – அதை விட கெடுதியும் வேறில்லை.; By not doing good works nothing is worse
Meaning in Tamil	அறம் செய்யாவிட்டால் கேடு வரும் தர்மமான நல்ல காரியங்களை செய்வதை காட்டிலும் நன்மை தரக்கூடியது வேறு இல்லை அதனை மறந்து விடுவதைக் காட்டிலும் கெடுதியும் வேறில்லை. நல்ல காரியங்களை மறந்துவிடுவது மிகவும் கெடுதல் ஏனெனில் அது தப்பான காரியங்கள் செய்யத் தூண்டிவிடும்
Meaning in English	Forgetting good work will cause doom There is nothing better than doing good work. Similarly, there is nothing worse than avoiding good work.
Explanation	The poet emphasizes the importance of good works. Simply by saying do good works people might not follow. So he says by forgetting good works we will land in a problem. If situation is not cordial we might not be able to do good work but we should not forget it. Otherwise, we will lose the habit of doing good work and will be provoked to do the wrong things.

குறள் 33 ஒல்லும் வகையான் அறவினை ஓவாதே செல்லும்வாய் எல்லாஞ் செயல்.

Transliteration	ollum vakaiyān aṛavinai ōvādhe sellumvāi ellām cheyal.
Meaning by words	ஒல்லும் வகையான் – உடலாலும் உள்ளத்தாலும் இயலுகின்ற திறத்தால் கூடிய மட்டிலும்; To the extent possible both physically and mentally அறவினை   – அறமாகிய நல்ல காரியங்களை ; good virtuous work ஓவாது  – தொடர்ச்சி விட்டுப் போகாதபடி இடைவிடாமல்.; without break செல்லும்வாய் எல்லாஞ்   – செய்வதற்கு வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தபோதெல்லாம்; whenever opportunity arises செயல்  – செய்ய வேண்டும்; must do
Meaning in Tamil	அறம் செய்யும் வழி உடலாலும் உள்ளத்தாலும் இயலுகின்ற திறத்தால் கூடிய மட்டிலும் அறமாகிய நல்ல காரியங்களை தொடர்ச்சி விட்டுப் போகாதபடி இடைவிடாமல், செய்வதற்கு வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தபோதெல்லாம் செய்ய வேண்டும்
Meaning in English	To the extent possible both physically and mentally, we must practice virtuous work incesseantly whenever opportunity arises.
Explanation	Other than renounced persons, the persons who are leading family life have limitations. So the poet says to the extent possible, both physically and mentally, all must practice virtuous work. Virtuous work is not only the duty of renounced people, but all must practice within their limitations.

குறள் 34 மனத்துக்கண் மாசிலன் ஆதல் அனைத்தறன் ஆகுல நீர பிற.

Transliteration	ollum vakaiyān aṛavinai ōvādhe sellumvāi ellām cheyal.
Meaning by words	மனத்துக்கண் – (அறம் செய்வனது) மனத்தில்; mind மாசிலன் ஆதல்  – களங்கம் இல்லாமல் இருக்க வேண்டும்; should be spotless அனைத்தறன்nbsp; – அவ்வளவுதான் அறம்.; that's what is virtue பிற   – மற்றதெல்லாம் ; other than that ஆகுல நீர  – வேடம், ஆரவாரம், ஆடம்பரம் நிறைந்தவை; full of pretense, fanfare and luxury
Meaning in Tamil	அறத்தின் இயல்பு அறம் செய்வனது மனத்தில் களங்கமற்றதாக வேண்டும்; அவ்வளவுதான் அறம்; மற்றதெல்லாம் வேடம், ஆரவாரம், ஆடம்பரம் நிறைந்தவை
Meaning in English	The nature of virtue Good work done with a spotless mind is only termed as a virtue. The others are just work full of pretense, fanfare and luxury.
Explanation	Good work without selfish interest is only righteousness. Rest are all just show off. When you give to the needy, we should not let left hand know what right hand is doing; that means we should do secretly not for publicity and ulterior motive to get something in back.

குறள் 35 அழுக்காறு அவாவெகுளி இன்னாச்சொல் நான்கும் இழுக்கா இயன்றது அறம்.

Transliteration	aḻukkāṛu avā veguli innāchol nāngum iḻukkā iyandradhu aṛam.
Meaning by words	அழுக்காறு – பிறரின் முன்னேற்றம் கண்டு பொறாமை; Jealousy over the progress of others அவா  – ஆசை ; desire வெகுளிnbsp; –  கோபம்; anger; இன்னாச்சொல்   – கடுஞ்சொல் ; swear words; நான்கும்  – (ஆகிய) நான்கும்; these four இழுக்கா   – தவிர்த்து; avoiding them இயன்றது அறம்   –  செய்வதுதான் அறம்.; doing is virtuous;
Meaning in Tamil	நான்கு குற்றங்கள் இதன் முன் குரலில் மனம் குற்றம் இல்லாமல் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று கூறினார் இந்தக் குறளில் அந்த குற்றங்கள் என்ன என்று கூறுகிறார். பிறரின் முன்னேற்றம் கண்டு பொறாமை கொண்டு அதனால் மனதில் ஆசையை வளர்த்து அது கிடைக்காதபோது கோபம் கொண்டு அதனால் சொற்களின் இனிமையை இழந்து கடும் சொல் கூறுவது எல்லாம் மனத்தின் குற்றமாகும். இவைகளை தவிர்த்து செய்வது அறமாகும்
Meaning in English	That conduct is virtue which is free from these four things, viz, malice, desire, anger and bitter speech.
Explanation	In the earlier verse the poet said that Good work done with a spotless mind is only termed as a virtue. In the verse he mentions the faults of the mind. It is the fault of the mind to be jealous of the progress of others and thus to cultivate desire in the mind and to get angry when it is not available and therefore lose the sweetness of words and say harsh words. It is virtuous to do without these faults of mind.

குறள் 36 அன்றறிவாம் என்னாது அறஞ்செய்க மற்றது பொன்றுங்கால் பொன்றாத் துணை.

Transliteration	andraŕivām ennādhu aŕanjcheyga maṭradhu pondrungāl pondrāth thunai.
Meaning by words	அன்றறிவாம்  – (மறைவதற்கு இன்னும் நிறைய காலம் இருக்கிறது) அப்போது பார்த்துக் கொள்ளலாம்; There is still a long time to go so good work can be taken care of later என்னாது  – என்று ஒத்திப் போடாமல் ; without postponing அறஞ்செய்க  –  நல்ல காரியங்களை செய்க; anger; இன்னாச்சொல்   – கடுஞ்சொல் ; swear words; நான்கும்  – (ஆகிய) நான்கும்; these four இழுக்கா   – தவிர்த்து; avoiding them இயன்றது அறம்   –  செய்வதுதான் அறம்.; doing is virtuous;
Meaning in Tamil	அறத்தை இப்போதே செய்க மறைவதற்கு இன்னும் நிறைய காலம் இருக்கிறது அப்போது பார்த்துக் கொள்ளலாம் என்று ஒத்திப் போடாமல் நல்ல காரியங்களை செய்க. அப்படி செய்வது உடல் வலிமை இழந்து போகும் தருணத்தில் உயிர் பிறந்த பிறகும் அழாவில்லாத மோட்சத்தையோ அல்லது மறுபிறப்பையோ அடைய அவை துணைபுரிகின்றன
Meaning in English	Do not procrastinate doing good works thinking that there is plenty of time before the end of life. Because the good works will support the attainment of immortal bliss better rebirth.
Explanation	We should not procrastinate good works thinking we can do at a later stage when we grow old or after retirement. At the time of death bed it will give satisfaction that we have done some good work and it will help us to liberation or better rebirth

குறள் 37 அறத்தாறு இதுவென வேண்டா சிவிகை பொறுத்தானோடு ஊர்ந்தான் இடை.

Transliteration	aṛaththāṛu ithuvena vēnda sivikai poṛuththānodu ūrndhān idai.
Meaning by words	அறத்து  – அறத்தினது; virtue's; ஆறு  – பயன்; benefits; இது என வேண்டா  –  இது தான் என்று எடுத்துக் கூற வேண்டியதில்லை; are not required to be mentioned; சிவிகை   – பல்லக்கை ; palenquin; பொறுத்தானோடு   – சுமப்பவனோடு ; one who carry ஊர்ந்தான் இடை   – அதன் மேல் ஏறி நடத்துகிறனிடத்தில் உள்ள வித்தியாசத்தை வைத்து புரிந்து கொள்ளலாம; can be understood from the difference between the person carrying the palenquin and the person who travels on it and ordering the carrier.

குறள் 38 வீழ்நாள் படாஅமை நன்றாற்றின் அஃதொருவன் வாழ்நாள் வழியடைக்கும் கல்.

Transliteration	vīḻnāḷ padāmai nandrātrin agdhoruvan vāḻnāḷ vaḻi adaikkum kal.
Meaning by words	வீழ்நாள்  – ;செய்யாது கழிகின்ற நாள் ; non-performing days; படாஅமை  – உண்டாகாமல்; not happening; நன்று ஆற்றின்  –  நல்ல முறைகளில் தர்மங்களை செய்தால் ; if the virtues are done in good ways; அஃது ஒருவன்   – அது ஒருவன்; that; வாழ்நாள்   – மீண்டும் பிறந்து வாழ வேண்டிய நிலையை ; The condition of having to be born again and live வழியடைக்கும் கல்   – தடுக்கும் கல்லாகும்; தடுக்கும் கல்லாகும்
Meaning in Tamil	அறத்தை இப்போதே செய்க ஒருவன் நாள் தவறாமல் அறம் செய்து கொண்டே வருவான் ஆனால் அவ்வறம் மீண்டும் பிறந்து வாழ வேண்டிய நிலையை தடுக்கும் கல்லாகும்
Meaning in English	If any one avoid non-performing days of doing good works, then this conduct with act as a stone to stop the condition of having to be born again.

குறள் 39 அறத்தான் வருவதே இன்பம் மற்றெல்லாம் புறத்த புகழும் இல.

Transliteration	aṛaththān varuvadhē inbam maṭrethellām puṛaththa pugaḻum ila.
Meaning by words	அறத்தான்  – ; தர்மம் ஆகிய நற்செயல்களை செய்ததனால்; Doing good deeds of dharma; வருவதே இன்பம்   – உண்டாகாமல்; gives enjoyment; புறத்த   –  மற்ற வழிகளில் கிடைக்கும் மகிழ்ச்சியும் அதற்கு நேர் மாறானவை;; enjoyment derived from other ways are not true enjoyment and leads to despair; புகழும் இல   –  புகழும் கிடைக்காது. பழி தான் கிடைக்கும்; will not get glory; only yields bad names;
Meaning in Tamil	அறம் செய்வாரே இம்மையில் இன்பமும் புகழும் எய்துவர் தர்மம் ஆகிய நற்செயல்களை செய்ததனால் வருகின்ற மகிழ்ச்சிதான் சரியான இன்பமாகும். மற்ற வழிகளில் கிடைக்கும் மகிழ்ச்சியும் அதற்கு நேர் மாறானவை; அவைகள் சிற்றின்பம். துன்பத்தை தரக்கூடியது. புகழும் கிடைக்காது. பழி தான் கிடைக்கும்
Meaning in English	Good works performed yields pleasure; rest yields no pleasure and deserves no praise.
Explanation	What achieved by doing good works is the true bliss and while what achieved by other works gives momentary pleasure and earns bad name. One should thrive to do good works to get true happiness and fame will follow by itself

குறள் 40 செயற்பால தோரும் அறனே ஒருவற்கு உயற்பால தோரும் பழி.

Transliteration	seyaṛpāla thōrum aṛanē oruvaṛku uyaṛpāla thōrum paḻ
Meaning by words	ஒருவற்கு  – ; ஒருவற்கு; For one; செயல்   –  செய்வதற்குரிய; fit to be performed; பாலது   –  தன்மை உடையது;; having the qualaity; ஓரும்   –  இடைச்சொல் அசைநிலை; a poetic expletive; அறனே   –  நல்வினையே; உயல்   –  ஒழிக்கக் கூடிய ; fit to be abandoned; பாலது   –  தன்மை உடையது;; having the qualaity; ஓரும்   –  இடைச்சொல் அசைநிலை; a poetic expletive; பழி   –  தீவினையே; vice
Meaning in Tamil	செய்வதும் நீக்குவதும் என்ன என்பது ஒருவருக்கு செய்வதற்குரிய தன்மை உடையது நல்வினையே ஒழிக்கக் கூடிய தன்மையுடையவை தீவினையே. அறம் மறுமைக்கான முக்தியை தருவதாலும் அதனைவிட வேறு மேலான எதுவும் இல்லை என்பதாலும் அறம் புகழை தருவதாலும் அறத்தை எப்போதும் நாம் செய்ய வேண்டும்.
Meaning in English	Whatever is fit to be performed is virtue and whatever ought to be abandoned is vice.
Explanation	What is doable is virtue and what is not doable is ill-deed. We must always do virtue without procrastination because virtue brings salvation, nothing more is better than it, virtue gives happiness, and also it earns fame.
